The Gala is a good all-round apple with a sweet, easy-eating appeal. With its Cox heritage you get great flavour especially when the apples are fresh.

If you’ve been fortunate enough to have tried a Gala straight from the tree you will know that it has a surprisingly punchy sweet flavour, which you just can’t find in the ones you buy in the supermarket.

Gala is a cross between Kidd’s Orange Red (an offspring of Cox Orange Pippin) and Golden Delicious – hence the Cox-like colouring. If they are very pale they’ve probably been picked too early, if they are very dark they will probably have been left on the tree to ripen.

Gala are often dismissed by apple purists as a little dull and boring, however if you like your apples sweet with a delicate flavour, Gala is actually very hard to beat. As with most apples the taste rockets if you can pick and eat it straight away, hence at Cawston Press we pick and press all our apples within 48 hours.
